School Uniform

At Mayfield, we recognise that many of our pupils have additional sensory needs, and for this reason, wearing school uniform is optional. Children are welcome to attend in comfortable clothing that allows them to learn and play freely, as some may find certain fabrics or styles restrictive, itchy, or uncomfortable.

For families who choose for their child to wear a school uniform, we are committed to ensuring it remains affordable, inclusive, and accessible to all. In line with Department for Education guidance, we have taken practical steps to make sure our uniform offers best value for money for parents and carers.

We ensure that our school uniform:

  • Is available at a reasonable cost
  • Provides the best possible value for money

We do this by:

  • Carefully considering whether any items with distinctive characteristics (such as logos, colours, or specific designs) are truly necessary
  • Limiting such items wherever possible, and when required, ensuring they are low-cost or long-lasting (e.g. ties)
  • Exploring affordable alternatives such as iron-on logos that maintain quality and durability
  • Avoiding specific requirements for items pupils could also wear on non-school days, such as coats, shoes, or bags
  • Keeping optional branded items to a minimum, allowing the uniform to act as a social leveller
  • Ensuring uniform expectations remain consistent across all classes and activities
  • Making second-hand uniform items easily available to families
  • Avoiding frequent specification changes that could create unnecessary cost
  • Consulting with parents and pupils before making any significant updates to our uniform policy

Our school uniform can be purchased easily from local supermarkets or high-street retailers, and it is not compulsory for items to include the school logo. We also encourage families to reuse or recycle uniform items wherever possible. If your child has outgrown their uniform, we warmly welcome donations back to school so that other families can benefit.

If you would like your child to wear school uniform, please see the details below for the optional items. Pupils are free to wear whichever items they feel most comfortable in.
