Neurodiversity & Inclusion

We are proud at Mayfield of the specialist programs we offer that are designed for students with autism, sensory processing differences, selective eating habits, and anxiety related to everyday experiences. These initiatives focus on building confidence, self-identity, emotional safety, and positive coping strategies, especially in areas where traditional approaches may fall short.

The ‘A Team’

Celebrating Autism, Embracing Strengths

We are dedicated to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment where every student can succeed. Our Autism Club, known as The A Team, provides a special space for students with autism to connect, celebrate their unique strengths, and gain a deeper understanding of their own identities.

Through a combination of engaging activities, social opportunities, and personalised support, The A Team empowers students to build confidence, develop self-advocacy skills, and explore their individual interests in a welcoming, accepting environment. The club focuses on embracing a positive view of autism, helping students recognise their differences as strengths, and creating a sense of belonging within the school community.

From fun group sessions and creative projects to guest speakers and peer mentoring, The A Team supports students in navigating challenges, celebrating their individuality, and flourishing both in school and beyond.

Desensitisation Club

At Mayfield School, many of our pupils experience anxiety or discomfort in certain social situations. To address these challenges, we have created the Desensitisation Club, a supportive space designed to help students gradually overcome their fears in a relaxed and enjoyable way. Using our immersive theatre as a key tool, we work with students to tackle everyday experiences that may cause anxiety, such as having their hair cut or interacting with medical professionals.

Our approach focuses on offering a safe, structured environment where students can build confidence and develop coping strategies step by step. By reducing these anxieties in a controlled, gradual manner, we aim to make these situations more manageable and less stressful for both the students and their families. The Desensitisation Club empowers students to face challenges with increased resilience, fostering independence and improving their overall well-being.

ARFID Lunch Club

Supporting Students with Gentle Food Exploration

We understand that for some students, eating and trying new foods can be a challenging experience. Our ARFID Lunch Club offers a safe, supportive, and structured environment where students with Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) or selective eating habits can gradually explore new foods at their own pace, without pressure or stress.

How We Support Students:

  • No-Pressure Approach: We create an environment of gentle encouragement, ensuring there are no expectations or force when it comes to trying new foods.
  • Small, Supportive Group: Students participate in small groups, surrounded by peers who understand and support each other, fostering a comfortable and welcoming space.
  • Sensory-Friendly Experiences: The club provides a sensory-rich environment where students can engage with food in a relaxed and calm manner, exploring textures, smells, and flavours at their own pace.
  • Celebrating Every Step: We celebrate all progress, big or small, reinforcing each student’s achievements and fostering a sense of accomplishment and confidence.

Led by a team of experienced staff, the ARFID Lunch Club helps students overcome food-related anxieties, building their confidence and empowering them to engage with food in a safe, positive way. We work closely with families to ensure that each child’s unique needs are met with understanding, care, and respect.

At Mayfield School, we believe that mealtimes should be a positive and enjoyable experience for all students. The ARFID Lunch Club is just one of the many ways we support our students’ emotional, physical, and social development, giving them the tools they need to thrive.
