We celebrated Chinese New Year with a full day of rich, sensory experiences that helped the everyone connect with the story, traditions and colours of the festival. In the morning, we watched a BBC clip introducing Chinese New Year and the animals of the zodiac, which really helped set the scene. We then sang a Chinese New Year song together, using a range of exciting props to bring the celebration to life β confetti balloons to represent fireworks, drums to echo the sounds of the parade, and bouncing rockets to add movement and energy. Everyone was highly engaged and responded well to the rhythm, colour and excitement.
In the afternoon, we took the celebration outdoors into the forest. Red and gold lanterns were hung from the trees, creating a magical atmosphere. Everyone explored the space and painted the lanterns using red and gold paint, developing their fineβmotor skills while learning about the symbolic colours of the festival. The natural environment added an extra sensory layer, and the activity encouraged curiosity, creativity and calm exploration.
It was a lovely, immersive celebration that blended culture, sensory learning and creativity in a way to fully access and enjoy
