The Role of School Governors at Mayfield

School governors play an essential role in the strategic leadership of our school, ensuring the educational success of our students and the effective management of resources. Their role is to provide oversight and accountability to ensure that the school’s mission and values are upheld, and that the Head Teacher is held to account for both the academic progress of students and the performance management of staff.

Core Strategic Functions

Governors are responsible for ensuring the clarity of the school’s vision and strategic direction. This includes holding the Headteacher accountable for educational performance, overseeing the financial performance of the school, and ensuring that resources are effectively and efficiently managed.

Key Responsibilities

In addition to these strategic functions, governors also have core responsibilities, including:

  • Ensuring accountability within the school
  • Acting as a supportive yet critical friend to the Head Teacher
  • Monitoring and evaluating the school’s progress
  • Managing the school’s budget and resources
  • Planning for the school’s long-term future
  • Setting the school’s aims, values, and ethos
  • Appointing senior members of staff, including the Head Teacher

Meetings occur at least once a term to discuss key matters such as policies, finances, building projects, staff appointments, school improvements, and health and safety. These discussions culminate in recommendations that are presented to the full Governing Body for consideration.

By working together, governors ensure that Mayfield continues to deliver high-quality education while maintaining strong financial stability and forward-thinking planning.
